Symphonic/Concert
Band season at Lee's Summit West starts after marching band
comes to a conclusion in the end of October. Students
audition for chair and band placement using materials
handed out during summer rehearsals and in the beginning of
the school year. The students that comprise each band meet
every morning during fourth hour.
The Symphonic Band meets in the band room (usually) with
Mr. Thurmond and the Concert Band meets in the choir room
with Mr. Harrel. Both bands work on a wide variety of music
for several concerts throughout the year.
MARCHING BAND
The Titan Pride
Marching Band 2009 show is entitled "Traffic." The band is
directed by Clif Thurmond and Shawn Harrel. The drumline
instructor is Will Braune. The band works hard five days a
week during fourth hour, then meets once a week on Tuesday
nights (sometimes Thursdays, check the calendar!).
The Titan Pride Marching Band is always looking ahead at
the next performance/competition and we're sure the coming
years will continue to bring success.
JAZZ BAND
Titan Jazz meets
outside the school day starting with small groups and
sectionals in the fall then shifting into full gear once
marching band is over. With occasional help from
Lamar's Donuts we find the
strength to begin our rehearsals before school. Despite
the fact that we're often still partially asleep as we
practice we can still swing! The band plays music by
Sammy Nestico, Frank Mantooth, Brad Mehldau and many
others.
The band is directed by Shawn Harrel. Mr. Harrel's degree
in jazz arranging and composing gives the band the chance
to play new and cutting-edge music that no other high
school jazz band will be playing.
